Nikon’s Fund was established by Fur-Ever Friends in 2016 in memory of "Nikon", a heroic K9 officer. He faithfully served the Winston-Salem Police Department for many years alongside his handler, Officer Karen Simmons, before he died during stomach surgery in July 2015. Nikon is credited with $160,000 in narcotics seizures, as well as finding approximately $300,000 in illegal narcotics, $32,000 worth of evidence and stolen property, and 37 firearms. He also helped locate 312 people in his active career.

The fund is also a way to honor all other K9 officers who serve and protect our community by searching out stolen property and narcotics as well as helping locate people, both fugitives and as part of search and rescue operations. Upon each K9 officer's retirement from Forsyth County, their handler - whether from the Police or Sheriff's Department - will be gifted a $250 retirement grant and will receive financial assistance with medical emergencies during the K9's lifetime.
